Classic Cars 'N' Kopi is a new series of meets dedicated to classic motors, its first meet hosted in New Bahru.
In a surprise twist, shortly after CnK was hosted during Labour Day, an announcement and word was a new event planned not so long after the just-concluded event, with a revised title and location.
A load of skeptism from some people that I came to read - New Bahru wasn't as accessible, the parking wasn't free like Dempsey Hill, there are lesser lots and more competition for parking with shoppers, and general unfamiliarity with the area.
I've been there, hmm - once only? I was there for the Lotus Emira Turbo SE launch, For a car launch that doesn't take up a huge amount of space, it cannot be compared with a car meet - which normally eats up lots, sometimes the roads too (people going onto the road for photos, etc)
To break down my experience of the meet - I actually prefer it a lot more over Dempsey.
Now, free parking isn't available at New Bahru, but the organizer for the event was able to provide owners with a free first hour of parking via coupon (limited to 100pc).
As agreed with some other folks who partook, walking around the location wasn't as exhausting as Dempsey - it being the equivalent to navigating in Suntec City mall. New Bahru's more conventional parking format makes it easy to walk around the place.
Best of all, there is actually a Cold Storage Fresh located in New Bahru. Where my carspotting circle is concerned, all who had previously went to Dempsey had always "stocked up" on meals and more importantly water, because of the expected prices at Dempsey Hill. Few wanted to make purchases for consumables there, but over in New Bahru, last-minute drinks and more weren't an issue anymore.
What the venue definitely loses on are the people attending the event - I noted a significant reduction in both cars and carspotters, but that to me is more of a good thing.
Again, the location for those not coming in via private transport is less accessible than Dempsey, and that would be the main drawback for the turnout for the meets.
Still though, I greatly preferred the "close-knitted" setting for this instalment of Classic Cars & Kopi. I hope to see more car meets hosted here - its surprisingly better than most had expected.
Thank you @sif_kx, @wayne.hobbyist and @mrsecretman1000 for chatting with me and group during the meet!
