About this website

This blog is dedicated to our sharings about general car enthusiast life in Singapore and others, a bit of a personal memorial of our youth and what we've done, seen, experienced, enjoyed. Sadly due to how things are run here, not all cars can live a full life as they would be intended. As such, we will try to document whatever we can and archive photos of what will one day become forgottens of the past. Life is a finite experience.

SG Archives: Honda Civic ESi (EH9)

The car of core memories for many car enthusiasts - no DOHC, just pa VTEC!

Having spoken to many people, colleagues and friends, many of them who lived through the golden-era period of the car scene which I perceive as 1990-2023 has experienced one of these cars before.

The ESi (chassis code EH9) trim for the EG-generation Civic is one of a tiny amount of trims offered in Singapore. While Japanese market brochures have presented a plethora of different trims with some having four-wheel-drive systems, export markets limited much of that creativity and focused purely on the bread-and-butter models.

The ESi comes with a D16Z6 engine that was also present in the EF-generation Civic that came before it, offered on the Si (ED7 chassis code) models.

Don't sleep on these yet, as the Z6 variant was also a VTEC motor. The sounds of these engines are beautiful and can compete with the high horsepower B16A that was the cream of the crop for the Civic.

Power was starting at around 125 horsepower and 144Nm, so not exactly the fastest, or even fast. But tuning for these egines were also available. Builds for up to 200 horsepower is apparently possible as are aspiration kits so turbochargers and superchargers are also possible.

This example here is mildly modified, with aftermarket corner lights and taillights.

Going by older articles, the corner lights for these are clear lenses, with an amber reflector inside of the unit. The taillights are also using amber lenses for the corner units for the rear.

Additionally, the trunk is surprisingly still original. The export markets that need a rectangular licence plate format received this less appealing insert for the licence plate, whereas Japanese market models have a much more compact version that to me and others, look cleaner (You may look at my car for reference). These are often swapped out for the Japanese market ones.

Overall, its an enthusiast-owned unit by the looks of things, if not a nice relic of old times as these mods, including the color, are to me a bit of an old-school setup overall. I  believe the front and rear fenders are also rolled outwards, adding to the stance of the car.

Last but not least, this Honda Jazz. These first-generation ones are also getting rare, and I will cover one at some point in time.
