About this website

This blog is dedicated to our sharings about general car enthusiast life in Singapore and others, a bit of a personal memorial of our youth and what we've done, seen, experienced, enjoyed. Sadly due to how things are run here, not all cars can live a full life as they would be intended. As such, we will try to document whatever we can and archive photos of what will one day become forgottens of the past. Life is a finite experience.

MY Archives: Honda Civic Type R (FL5)

Honda's spicy 2-litre K-series and its new wielder.

The current Honda Civic Type R is a serious piece of kit for fans of the red Honda badge, being one of the quickest Type Rs in the name's lineage. Improved over the previous generation in performance and especially styling, this new Type R is a surefire hit for the enthusiast market.

It seems to have particularly hit the Malaysian market like Shopee 10.10 sales, with the parallel import market having a super good run with new-and-old Type R buyers sweeping in to get their hands on one. Copiously popular on Instagram, Tiktok and what not, its safe to say that the FL5 is incredibly popular in the Malaysian market.

Where this website is concerned, we think its somewhat popular in Singapore too, but not as much when the piece of paper to register it temporarily for ten years is the cost of one FL5 in Malaysia - customers are staying with their used FD2 Type Rs for the time being.

Anyways, this FL5 can be seen here with a friend from across the border. Penang is a pretty good location to see a mix of three countries present if you're very lucky, with Singapore being the rarest but not impossible to find.

The Mazda 2 sedan is registered in Khon Kaen Province located in northeastern Thailand, approximately a 1,500km drive out to Penang.

Returning to the FL5, it has a healthy amount of base updates over the outgoing FK8 Type R of previous, with a substantial styling change. Most people mention - and I agree with - that the styling of the new Type R is much more sleek and simple over the previous.

The wheelbase is also extended, being longer and wider overall plus a lower height than the old model, improving general stability and grip.

The new Type R also has a small power and torque upgrade over the FK8, receiving a 10 PS and 20 Nm bump to 330 PS (325 horsepower) and 420 Nm. No heavy updates was received over the FK8 where the spec sheet is concerned, only a few upgrades to some of the important parts.

This boost blue as also become a popular color amongst the community. I hear of owners of previous generations who are considering / have already repainted their older Civics into this color.

The Mazda 2 on the other hand is far from being an enthusiast favorite, easily outshined by the likes of the 3 (accounting for the turbocharged variant with all-wheel drive) and MX-5. Still, it isn't going to lose out on the sales end of things, with the 2 being a pretty popular car for customers looking for a day-to-day compact sedan.

These two make for a pretty nice yin and yang. On one end of the metric you have the enthusiast favorite and the other the commuter choice.
