About this website

This blog is dedicated to our sharings about general car enthusiast life in Singapore and others, a bit of a personal memorial of our youth and what we've done, seen, experienced, enjoyed. Sadly due to how things are run here, not all cars can live a full life as they would be intended. As such, we will try to document whatever we can and archive photos of what will one day become forgottens of the past. Life is a finite experience.

SG Archives: BMW 3-Series 318is (E36)

My sentimental goodbye to the last 318is sedan in Singapore.

It has been a while since this particular car has been taken off the road, but better late than never, right?

To be honest, I never really lusted after this E36 or anything, but this was the first car I recorded with a camcorder I received from my grandfather. That camcorder is still used some two years later, having been just as influential to my work and my personal life as my Sony a6400 has been.

I've seen this car twice. Once was in 9 July 2023. Photos and videos will be attached below. Apparently, I did see it the year before on 5 January 2022, before it received much TLC and a much nicer cosmetic exterior.

The 318is was available too as a sedan and not just the coupe. Its trim denotes to a sport-oriented variant, using a M42B18 1.8-litre 4-cylinder engine producing 138 horsepower and 175 Nm. Later variants past 1995 would use a M44B19 1.9-litre 4-cylinder making identical horsepower with 181 Nm. In this case, the 318is had a 4-speed automatic transmission which this unit is, although a manual was available for the trim.

The 318is was sold alongside the 318is coupe. Prices for the 318is started at S$150k for the automatic which was what this car was.

Pricelist from Motoring from ~1995

This E36 was listed for sale approximately four times, with it not undergoing any substantial changes until 2023, where it received new parts plus paintjob. For most of its life, it was in largely original cosmetic nick bar for some maintanence such as Bilstein absorbers.

This car has been scrapped at the start of year, being helplessly listed for sale a month before its COE due date. Unfortunately, luck was not in its favor. It was brought over to a scrap company and has since been dissassembled and parted out.

With the scrapping of this unit, Singapore has bid farewell to its final 318is sedan. Goodbye SKB5562X.
