Nostalgic affair with this particular 5-Series since seeing it three years ago in my first few car meets.
I've seen this car more often than most others. Not that often, actually.
However, given my year at my company now and needing to attend events, I've no doubt made my share of friends within the media circle and spoke to many others (but sheepishly never exchanged contacts). If you knew me this way and is actually reading this now, hello!
I remember seeing this car some three years ago, one of my first car events I attended then, at Satay By The Day and subsequently at The Oval in Seletar. Those were some of my first few meets, and the first with the Sony a6400 I'm still using.
The E39-generation of 5-series was and is a hit, being super successful in its day and still a popular classic today. Good chassis, good luxury, the amazing M5 of this generation that is nothing but song and praise and is said to be one of the best cars of all time, its got to be good.
This car is a 520i, so not the powerhouse that is the 5.0-litre M5. Nevertheless, this car likely uses the 2.0-litre M52 engine outputting 148 horsepower and 190Nm of torque. Judging by the old-school etching of the number plate on the glass panels (to avoid theft), this car was registered roughly from August to November in 1997, so the specific engine code used would likely be the M52B20.
Power is sent through the rear-wheels via a 5-speed automatic transmission. Surviving E39s have not been manual cars; not to my knowledge. This is one such automatic car, with a M-Sport bodykit and "angel eyes" LED headlights. Sitting on Style 37 OEM wheels complete the look.
I might not see this car for the forseeable future unless I randomly chance upon it again like I had here at Somserset, but its great to catch up on a car I effectively remember fondly from all those years ago.
